Marvel’s Wolverine Game: PS5 Release Date News, Rumours, and More

After the barnstorming success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games are taking on another fan favourite Marvel character with a brand new game based on the adamantium-clawed Mutant, Wolverine.

It’s well documented that a lot of the team at Insomniac love their comics and it seems they’re also huge fans of the Logan too, with the devs previously suggesting his name came up a lot when discussing the team’s future beyond the web-slinger. Now it looks like Insomniac will finally get their chance and whilst the game is still quite far away from launching, there’s a lot we already know about the game. So read on for everything we know so far about Marvel’s Wolverine.

June 18, 2022 - Insomniac hire MCU concept artist

As per VGC, Insomniac has hired an experienced Marvel Cinematic Universe concept artist to work as an art director for the Spider-Man 2 game at the studio.

Davison Carvalho worked as a freelance concept artist on Marvel movies such as Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok and Captain Marvel.

Could he be involved with any of the work on Marvel’s Wolverine? We imagine he’d certainly have some creative input on the project, especially if Insomniac is keen to create their own distinct universe with joined-up characters similar to the MCU.

June 2, 2022 - Summer Game Fest Is Next Week

Don’t forget that the third Summer Game Fest takes place on June 9, and promises to showcase “what’s next in gaming with huge new game announcements, world premieres, special guests, and much more”.

It’s also worth noting that the show’s creator Geoff Keighley has let fans know that the show will be “primarily focused” on already announced games.

What are the chances we see an announcement for Marvel’s Wolverine? Look we don’t hold out much hope. Although PlayStation was listed as one of the partners for Summer Game Fest, it could be that this was merely a reference to the State of Play from last week. Still, you never know, Geoff Keighley could still surprise us. Either way, tune it, it’ll be fun!

PS5 Release Date News

At the time of writing Marvel’s Wolverine game doesn’t have a release date. Insomniac Games have gone on record to say that it is in “very early development” when it was announced in late 2021. As such, we doubt we’ll be seeing the game until late 2023 at the very earliest. It’s worth noting that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is also slated for release in 2023. So we could see Marvel’s Wolverine pushed to 2024.

Is Marvel’s Wolverine coming to PS4?

As noted above, Marvel’s Wolverine is still quite a long way away, potentially well over two years away. Given this you would think it’s safe to assume that the game is only being developed for next-gen consoles and won’t be a cross-gen title like what we saw with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Although Insomniac Games hasn’t gone out of their way to confirm that the game isn’t coming to PS4, they have previously posted a tweet that states it is “exclusively” for PlayStation 5. It’s also worth noting that Insomniac’s most recent title, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, was a PS5 platform exclusive.

Marvel’s Wolverine Trailer

Marvel’s Wolverine was announced during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase event in September 2021. The trailer does not show actual gameplay and is only a short teaser trailer to set the scene.

Based on the short teaser, the game appears to have a more bloody and mature tone, at least when compared to Insomniac Game’s Marvel’s Spider-Man title. You can take a look at the trailer just below:

Confirmed Details

With the game still quite far away there’s limited information about the game, however, we’ve listed below the key details which we have seen reported or confirmed by Insomniac staff.

Directed by Spider-Man: Miles Morales creative leads

A PlayStation Blog post confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine is being directed by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director), who both led the creative efforts on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Wolverine has a mature and emotional narrative

According to Creative Director Brian Horton, Marvel’s Wolverine will have a “mature tone” and boast an “emotional narrative”.

It will respecting the Wolverine DNA

“In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit,” wrote Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games.

A 'full-size' game

On Twitter one fan asked if the game was a “big game” or a “Miles Morales” sized game. For context, the first game was around 17-34 hours depending on how much you completed. By comparison, Miles Morales was around 18 hours to complete everything. Replying on Twitter, Creative Director Brian Horton confirmed that the game would be a “full sized” game, which makes us think it would be more along the lines of the first Spider-Man title.

Easter Eggs

Although the Marvel’s Wolverine trailer was only a short teaser which didn’t offer any gameplay, it did contain quite a few subtle easter eggs which may or may not be hinting at the direction the game could be taking.

Everything from references to Hulk, Madripoor, and even a connection to Marvel’s Spider-Man which might place this game in the same connected universe. There are a lot of sneaky clues to be found, but rather than list them out have a watch of the below video to take a closer look and see for yourself.
