RECAP – CWL London 2019

100 Thieves captured their first esports championship with a victory at CWL London this past weekend.

The Call of Duty World League made its first visit to Europe for the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 season this past weekend for the CWL London Major. Featuring one of the most electrifying crowds in the CWL’s history and a $325,000 prize pool, there were plenty of things that helped to make the third major Black Ops 4 tournament of 2019 one to remember.

Coming off a 3rd place finish at CWL Las Vegas and a 2nd place finish at CWL Fort Worth, Splyce was regarded as one of the favorites to walk away with a championship this past weekend. Starting the tournament with a 2-1 record in Pool Play, Splyce was poised to make another impressive top three run at London.

However, the streak of top three placements for Splyce in the Black Ops 4 season came to an end at CWL London, as the talented team was eliminated following a Winners Bracket loss to Team Heretics and a losers bracket loss to Team Envy.

Another major storyline that captured the attention of fans throughout the event was the resurgence of Call of Duty powerhouse OpTic Gaming. Following a disappointing finish at Fort Worth after collecting the Las Vegas Championship to begin the year, OpTic Gaming put together a very impressive performance in London. Securing a perfect 3-0 record in Pool Play, OpTic was able to collect a spot in the Winners Bracket.

From there, OpTic Gaming took down FaZe Clan and Heretics to claim a spot in the Winners Bracket Finals, where the Greenwall faced off against 100 Thieves. Unfortunately for OpTic Gaming, 100 Thieves would defeat them and send them to the Losers Bracket Finals where they were knocked from CWL London by eUnited and finished the event with a 3rd place finish.

This result allowed for former OpTic Gaming Call of Duty star and 100 Thieves owner Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag’s team to face off against eUnited in the Grand Finals. Securing a 3-1 victory over eUnited, the 100 Thieves Call of Duty team claimed the first championship in the organization’s young history and collected the $125,000 grand prize. Congratulations, 100 Thieves!
