A couple of years ago, crossplay felt like a distant pipedream. Something utterly ridiculous that could never be a reality whilst platform holders continued to wall off players from one another. As per The Verge, Sony initially blocked cross-platform play for both Rocket League and Minecraft, despite Nintendo and Microsoft both enabling players to play across Xbox and Switch. Had it not been for the mass outrage when Sony blocked Fortnite crossplay in 2018, we might not have got where we are today, which thankfully, is far more harmonious.
Now With Rockstar Games releasing a new standalone version of GTA Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, there are even more ways to enjoy the game. But likewise, it means there are even more players wondering if they can play with their friends across different platforms. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t quite that simple, so read on, and we’ll explain everything you need to know.
Does GTA Online have crossplay?
Despite being available since 2013 and having sold something close to 150 million copies, GTA Online does not feature crossplay. Remarkable really, given it’s now 2022. This means PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players cannot play together. At least for the time being.
Can you play GTA Online on PS4 with PS5 players?
This can get a bit complicated but, here we go. If you’re playing GTA Online on PS5 and you’re using the PS4 version of the game, you can play together. However, if you’ve downloaded the new next-gen version of GTA Online, you can only play with players who are also using the next-gen version of the game. So think carefully which version you want to use, because if your friends can’t get a PS5 it might be worth holding off.
Can you play GTA Online on Xbox One with Xbox Series S|X players?
Like PlayStation users, this question is again a bit of a minefield. Xbox One players can play with Xbox Series players using the old version of the game. But anyone using the standalone next-gen version of GTA Online will not be able to play with older Xbox One consoles. Just as we warned above, it could be worth playing on the older version of GTA Online if your friends haven’t upgraded their Xbox One console yet. Or leave them and enjoy all those fancy next-gen bells and whistles on your own.

GTA Online is available to play on PC via Epic Games Store, Steam, and the Rockstar Games Launcher. Thankfully, it doesn’t actually matter what version of GTA Online you’re using, as PC players can play GTA Online with all PC users, regardless of which version they’re using.
