Red Dead Online Summer Update 2022: Release Date, Leaks & Everything You Need To Know

Red Dead Online Summer Update 2022: Release Date, Leaks & Everything You Need To Know

Red Dead Online has not received a new content update since July 13, 2021. But there’s cause for hope with Summer approaching and the chance for Rockstar to redeem themselves by releasing a Summer Update just as they have done for the game in previous years.

Fans will no doubt have seen #SaveRedDeadOnline trending on social platforms at various stages and it’s no secret that the Red Dead community has become frustrated by the lack of content and updates for the game. Not least compared to GTA Online which continues to have plenty of meaningful updates, with The Contract DLC being the most recent and a new GTA+ Subscription service to boot.

With a GTA Online Summer Update already looking primed to arrive in the coming weeks, it’s only right to assume Red Dead Online will also receive some new content too. Quite frankly who knows what the community might think if it doesn’t! Still, we’re remaining hopeful.

July 7, 2022 - Summer Update Plans Confirmed

Rockstar Games has announced ‘What’s to Come this Summer and Beyond’ in a new blog post earlier today. This also includes what’s happening with Red Dead Online.

Resources Being Moved to GTA 6

“Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.”

Red Dead Online Updates

Monthly Red Dead Online Content Updates Continue

“Firstly, with both new and experienced players engaging in the wealth of activities already added to this massively rich world including Specialist Roles, story-based cooperative missions, competitive Showdown Modes, and much more, we will continue to showcase these unique additions through Red Dead Online’s monthly events as we move forward, so players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.”

No Major Red Dead Online Content Updates

“Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.”

July 5, 2022 - Red Dead Online updates for July announced

Well, this doesn’t look good. Rockstar has today announced the new monthly Red Dead Online updates for July and, they last all month.

With GTA Online, the GTA+ Rewards end on July 18, leaving many to wonder if the new Summer update will drop on July 19. But with Red Dead Online, it looks less promising.

We hate to say it, but there might not be any Summer update coming to Red Dead Online this year.

July 1, 2022 - Watch out for July 18!

It looks as though the GTA Online Summer Update could be coming on July 19; and if Rockstar had anything going on for Red Dead Online, that’s roughly when we should learn more about it!

For those wondering the GTA+ Rewards for July were just announced and somewhat strangely they are set to expire – quite early we might add – on July 18. There doesn’t seem to be much justification, but we suspect that it could be because that’s when the GTA Online Summer update is set to launch.

Hopefully, we’ll find out more soon, but otherwise, mark your calendars for July 18.

June 20, 2022 - 'No hope for this game'

As per Tez2 on the GTAForums, it’s not looking good for Red Dead Online fans.

“Most of the team is likely working on GTA VI whereas some are working on GTA Online due to being more popular and GTA+ being a thing now.

Lack of background updates and no signs of a new DLC pack in development to this day on SteamDB all shows no hope for this game.

At least, Rockstar is working on a new security patch to address some exploits that likely exist on GTAV as well.”

June 2, 2022 - GTA Online Summer Update leaks

Some dataminers have found a few references to what could be a DLC update for GTA Online’s Summer update. As pointed out by Tez2, the game appears to have added a new scenario spawn point which could be pointing towards a new heist, or potentially some new mission content like what we saw with The Contract DLC. There’s also a new bit of code in relation to ‘movie set’ but it’s still not entirely clear what this could be in reference to.

Now obviously, this isn’t Red Dead Online related, but hopefully, it signals we’re fast approaching news for Rockstar’s summer updates, and with any luck that will also include Red Dead Online.

May 19, 2022 - The updates were for a security patch

It looks like those changes to the QaBeta Branch on steam were to do with an upcoming security patch for the game.

May 12, 2022 - Rockstar updates QaBeta Branch on Steam

Is Rockstar getting ready to release some new DLC for Red Dead Online? Take a look at the tweets below from StephKebab who has spotted some recent changes to Red Dead Online’s QABeta Branch on SteamDB. The last time the game’s DLC Pack Depot received similar changes was prior to the rollout of the Blood Money update last summer. Fingers crossed!

Release Date

The next big Red Dead Online update will likely release in July.

Looking back that’s when the 2020 summer update for the game was released, and it’s also when Rockstar put out the GTA Online seasonal update that year.

Granted, in 2021 the updates came much sooner, in May 2022. But as you can see it’s mid-June at the time of writing and there is no sight of any updates for Red Dead Online or GTA Online. Although, it is worth mentioning we’ve seen leaks to suggest something is coming to GTA Online at some point soon.

We imagine we’ll see a full announcement towards the end of June with a release in July.

What To Expect From Red Dead Online’s 2022 Summer Update?

We would urge caution with expectations for this years Red Dead Online Summer Update. For one, as we’ve already established, the game has seen next to no updates in nearly 365 days. The event weeks we see in GTA Online have turned into event months in Red Dead Online, and most of the biggest Rockstar community members have all but lost interest. Who can blame them with zero updates or communication on the game.

To set your expectations, here’s a look at what Red Dead Online announced for their Summer Update plans in 2021. Later the team would go on to release Red Dead Online: Blood Money. We would imagine this year’s update will be an equivalent update or more likely something less sizable. Set your expectations accordingly.
