The Link’s Awakening Remake Is So Much More Than A Remake

It takes a special skill to make a remake feel like it’s better than the original, but Nintendo manages to do it with Link’s Awakening.

The Link’s Awakening Remake Is So Much More Than A Remake

Nintendo is looking to awaken the flames of our hearts with a complete remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. This iconic title first released in 1993 on the Game Boy, and since then has been considered one of the best Zelda games of all time. And now a whole new generation of gamers is going to experience the adventure we all went on over two decades ago.

But the question is, in a world where remakes are becoming so much more than their originals, can they even be called remakes? Perhaps now they are an extension of their ancestors. Less of a remake and more of a reincarnation. What makes the Link’s Awakening remake so drastically different from the original 1993 version? So many things!

Link's Awakening Dungeon Editor

The Dungeon Editor will allow you to create your own dungeon experiences so you can continue to have new adventures, even after you finish Link’s Awakening.

The first thing we have to discuss is the ability to make dungeons. After the huge success of Super Mario Maker 2, the ability to create worlds, maps, and areas is a feature we want in every single game we play. Now, that feature is coming to The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

Though it might not have the same level of customization as Super Mario Maker, the Dungeon Editor in Link’s Awakening looks to scratch that itch.

Links Awakening Chamber

Each Chamber will contain its own layout and items as well as enemies and bosses.

Based on what we’ve seen from trailers and the various demos shown at E3 2019, it appears as if the Dungeon Editor will be utilizing a “tile” feature. Once a dungeon is cleared, players will earn Chambers that can be slotted into a heart-shaped space. Fill the heart with various Chambers and you can play through as if it was a full dungeon.

It doesn’t look like players will be able to customize the finer details of each piece, but their position in regards to one another will likely be important. You won’t want to position two difficult Chambers together without giving yourself one that might contain much-needed recovery items.

This should offer a whole lot of replay value for the average gamer. While Link’s Awakening is vast in scope, it’s still only going to offer the story experience it has. It can’t be infinitely updated. But now with a dungeon editing tool, you have the ability to take a finite experience and stretch it as far as you’re willing to go!

Link looks as excited as us at the new and amazing visuals!

It’s been 26-odd years, some visual advancements are to be expected. However, the look of Link’s Awakening is unbelievably enticing. Gone are the days of jaggy pixels, say hello to the smooth, adorable glow of a new Link.

This bold new look is unlike any other Zelda title out there. Nintendo always manages to amaze us when a new Zelda style comes out. Shifting from the bit-era of the Nintendo Entertainment System, to the gritty graphics of the Nintendo 64 was mindboggling. Then there were the days of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, two drastically different styles.

And now this plasticine-like quality of Link’s Awakening is here and we couldn’t have imagined how different a remake could look. The heart and soul of the original are present, but it truly does feel like it has been reincarnated into something else altogether. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

Grezzo is assisting Nintendo in bringing Link’s Awakening to the present day. The team has been responsible for some incredible remakes in the past.

While Nintendo might be manning the helm, another familiar name is providing assistance in bringing Link’s Awakening to the Nintendo Switch: Grezzo. The company first appeared on the scene back in 2010, but it wasn’t until 2011 that they got their hands on the Zelda IP.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D was released on the Nintendo 3DS, and this was made possible due to the hard work of the team at Grezzo. Then four years later Majora’s Mask was remade for the 3DS. The team has proven that they have the chops to take beloved games and bring them forward so that a new generation of Nintendo fans can experience them. We can’t wait to see the fruits of Grezzo’s labor.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake is how we remember the original looking. When we imagine it, we don’t think of pixels, we think of the lush world the remake is offering. It’s as if Grezzo and Nintendo have reached into our memories and created the ultimate reincarnation of how we remember one of our favorite Zelda titles. We cannot wait to see what else is new in Link’s Awakening when it launches for Nintendo Switch on September 20, 2019.
