If you want to make money in Far Cry 5 to buy weapons and other items to give your character an edge, then we definitely recommend fishing. There are numerous different species of fish to discover in the various lakes, rivers and streams of Hope County, all of which fetch a good prize from vendors. If you want to fish though, you’ll need the right gear, so let’s show you where to find a fishing pole in Far Cry 5 early in the game.
How to get a fishing pole
You don’t need to play that long to unlock a fishing pole, but you do need to complete the small island where you wake up with local resistance leader Dutch. This gives you access to the rest of the map and the ability to fast-travel. Once you’ve completed the first three story missions and Dutch tells you where to go, pop open the map and make a bee-line directly west of Dutch’s bunker and across the water. You’re looking for the Vasquez Residence.
Make sure to clear out any enemies in the area, and once you’ve done that you’ll have a new fast travel point. Go inside the Vasquez Residence – through the front door with the flag waving over it – and go towards straight the back of the house. Take a fight into a small hallway and you should see a tool rack on the right-hand wall. Lurking innocently there is your prize: your first fishing pole. Head over to it and interact with it to pick it up. You should check the rest of the house, too, as there’s some other loot to collect.
How to equip the fishing pole
The fishing pole will be automatically added to your weapon wheel, but unlike guns and grenades the fishing pole is accessible through a secondary utility wheel. Pop open the weapon wheel with L1 or Left Bumper (depending on your console) and then press R1 or Right Bumper and you will switch to the utility wheel. Swipe up towards the fishing pole icon and your character will whip out the fishing pole.
Once you have the fishing pole, you can head towards any body of open water, equip it, and start fishing! There’s a bit of nuance to fishing – and you’ll want to unlock the associated perk to help tire the fish out more quickly – but once you master it you will be able to make thousands of dollars in pretty quick fashion, giving you access to the huge arsenal of weapons, tools and vehicles available through the game’s vendors.
