Will There Be A Guardians of the Galaxy Game Sequel?

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game came out of nowhere in 2021. Whilst a leak back in 2017 had suggested Eidos Montreal was making a Guardians of the Galaxy video game, it wasn’t until E3 2021 before Square Enix officially announced the game, with an October 2021 release date no less.

Despite a few minor issues, critical reception to the game was widely positive, with the game going on to achieve a broadly positive 80+ score on Metacritic. It also won big at The Game Awards, and lead the BAFTA Games Award nominations. Despite all this positivity, had the game done enough to earn itself a sequel? Read on for everything you need to know.

June 3 - Star Lord Voice Actor Says No DLC, Sequel In the Works

You may not know actor Jon McLaren by name, but he provided the voice for Star-Lord in Eidos-Montréal’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Speaking on a new podcast, McLaren confirmed he wasn’t aware of any ongoing DLC or sequels for the game.

“The sad reality is after we’re done [working] with Eidos on this game, we’re kind of shut out from all that,” the actor said. “So it’s not… it’s not something we’re privy to. That would be something…that would be a decision either at the Eidos level if they felt they wanted to do…anything other, you know, another game. Actually, that’s probably a Marvel decision, to be honest.”

Did the Guardians of the Galaxy game sell well?

As part of a financial results briefing in February 2022, Square Enix revealed that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy performed below sales expectations. Despite critical acclaim, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy failed to meet Square Enix’s sales expectations at launch, with the company president Yosuke Matsuda (Via VGC) telling investors that “despite strong reviews, the game’s sales on launch undershot our initial expectations.”

Despite the slow launch, sales did seemingly pick up in November 2021 and into the new year. However, senior MST Financial analyst David Gibson (Via Metro) has suggested that Square Enix’s recent sale of Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal [to the Embracer Group] is due to the Marvel Avengers and Guardians Of The Galaxy games making a $200 million loss for the company.

Will there be DLC for Guardians of the Galaxy?

Eidos Montreal has said that the Guardians of the Galaxy video game will have no DLC. Executive narrative director, Mary DeMarle, confirmed this during a pre-launch interview with Stevivor.

“There isn’t going to be any DLC for this game,” DeMarle explained unequivocally. “That’s because, for us, it’s very important that on day one, when players get this game, they can have access to everything there is about this game and to experience it. Right off the bat, they can get all of the costumes or outfits that are available, and they can find all the abilities as they progress through the game. It’s all there.”

Given there are no plans for DLC or future expansions to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, it stands to reason that any new ideas, content, or storylines will be saved for any future sequels.

Will there be a sequel to the Guardians of the Galaxy video game?

This is the ultimate question, and right now, as of May 2022, it’s not entirely clear given the ongoing sale of Eidos Montreal to the Embracer Group. It’s not clear what the new owners might want from Eidos Montreal, and it could be a new Deus Ex game could be on the card, rather than a sequel to GotG.

That being said, prior to the sale, Senior Narrative Director Mary DeMarle had spoken about the possibility of working on a sequel during an interview with The Radio Times.

“On that one, I think we’re gonna leave you in suspense,” DeMarle suggested. “I mean, we surprised everyone by being secret on this one for the longest time. So we’re just going to maintain a little air of mystery on that one.”

Richard Jacques who worked on the game’s excellent score also added: “With Game Pass, though, it’s been amazing seeing a whole new generation of players taking it up that hadn’t got around to playing it for whatever reason.

“Seeing people just all of a sudden listening to the Star-Lord album, listening to the score online, you know – we’ve seen our numbers jump through the roof since Game Pass has been out. I think the gamers are really enjoying playing it.”
