EVO 2017 Recap

The best fighting game players from around the globe descended on Las Vegas over the weekend to put their skills to the test against one another in EVO 2017. The entire event ran from July 14th to 16th in what ended up being a jam-packed weekend full of breath-taking, adrenaline-pounding moments.

With nine different titles being played, the event was a boiling pot of variety. The games on show were: Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, Injustice 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Wii U, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, King of Fighters XIV, and Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3.

Competing over the weekend were two members of Splyce, representing two different titles. Filipino Champ dove into Street Fighter V while RyanLV took the helm of Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3.

Filipino Champ was up against Echo Fox’s Tokido, a player who he’s fought against in previous events. The match up for Street Fighter V was Tokido using Akuma with FChamp opting for Dhalsim.

FChamp put up his skills and managed to pull out some unbelievable moves. FChamp pulled ahead 2-1, securing an early foothold. It was looking like it was a sealed deal for FChamp, but Tokido came back with a barrage of attacks, stun-locking and bringing the match to a tie at 2-2.

Unfortunately for FChamp, the following round was over as Tokido’s offensive style ended the round. Stuck at a stalemate, the next round had everyone on the edge of their seats as both sides pulled ahead to a point where the literal final round was what counted. In the end, Tokido claimed the victory, but FChamp, the true champion that he is, displayed some solid respect post-match. Congratulations to FChamp for finishing in 8th position overall!

Over in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3, RyanLV maintained a staggering undefeated record throughout the tourney to fight his way into the grand finals and face off against EG’s Nychrisg. RyanLV entered with Phoenix, Chun-Li, and Morrigan while Chris G used Vergil, Morrigan, and Doctor Doom. What followed was an incredible display of skills and a (bullet-)hell of a lot of fireballs.

The two players’ battles culminated in a thrilling tiebreaker, a truly unforgettable experience as RyanLV and Chris G threw everything they had at one another. Chris G had RyanLV on the ropes with Phoenix down to a mere sliver of health. It was now or never, RyanLV activated Dark Phoenix’s infamous X-Factor and quickly downed Vergil. Doctor Doom was all that stood between RyanLV and first place, and as Chris G took control, Dark Phoenix blasted him down with even more fireballs. Chris G got a taste of his own medicine as his Doctor Doom could do nothing but be consumed by fire.

In the end, RyanLV walked away with first place for Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 in what was a truly spellbinding battle. Big congrats to RyanLV!
