Most Anticipated Video Games of 2018

A New Year means new games - here's our round up of the biggest and best!

2018 is here! Whether you’re a PC gamer, an avid PlayStation 4 fan, an Xbox One supporter, or a Nintendo Switch lover, there’s something waiting for you.

Anthem

Let’s start off with a big one. This is a brand new IP coming from the creative minds that brought us the original Mass Effect trilogy. Anthem, developed by BioWare, is described as an online multiplayer action role-playing game set in the in a rich science fiction world. The easiest way to describe Anthem is a cross between Destiny, Titanfall and Mass Effect. Players take on the role of a Freelancer, someone who can use exosuits called Javelins. These suits allow you to fly around, fight aliens and marauders, wield massive weaponry, and generally kickass. Not a lot is known about this title, so expect more information soon.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 is the latest entry into the open-world series, taking place in a fictional area of Montana called Hope County. There’s a preacher by the name of Joseph Seed who is a little less holy man and a little more crazy cult leader and his followers are causing all sorts of trouble. Obviously, the best course of action is to dive in, destroy their communes, save the people they’ve abducted and free the town of the cults grasp!

God of War

The literal god of war himself, Kratos, is returning in his next adventure on the PlayStation 4. Simply titled “God of War”, this game departs from the Greek mythology and steps toward Norse mythology – so expect to see a few Norse gods popping up. Further defining its role as an IP refresh is the inclusion of Kratos’ son, Atreus. Players will be helping Kratos train and teach his son, which is sure to create a lot of emotionally intense situations.

Sea of Thieves

Everyone likes pirates, literally everyone. We’ve asked. So it’s a good thing that Rare is designing what looks to be one of the best pirate games in recent years. Sea of Thieves lets you team up with your friends aboard a pirate ship, set sail across vast oceans, spy land from atop your crow’s nest, search for treasure, and get up to other piratey things.

Vampyr

Vampyr is shaping up to be a phenomenal title from the creative minds of Life is Strange. Set in a world where vampires exist, players take on the role of Jonathan Reid, a doctor who has a shady secret – he’s a vampire who thirsts for human blood. Using all manner of vampire abilities and sleuth work, you will need to learn about your targets, figure out their schedule and then make the move to suck their blood. But there’s more than just quenching your thirst, you will also need to take care of vampire hunters, werewolves and other monsters looking to end your vampire ways.

A Way Out

Originally revealed at E3 2017, A Way Out is a cooperative experience the like of which you’ve never encountered before. Designed to be played specifically in coop, A Way Out is a third-person action-adventure game best played in splitscreen with a friend, as everything you do in the game is dependent upon another player and the perspective they can bring. Why, I hear you ask? Because you’re trying to break out of prison. You and your friend will take on the role of Leo and Vincent as you distract guards, crawl through vents and help one another escape. Time to find your prison-break buddy.

Psychonauts 2

Double Fine Productions is back at it again with Psychonauts 2, a sequel to the cult classic game from 2005. In Psychonauts 2, players slip into the mind of Raz, a quirky character with extremely powerful psychic abilities. Raz is able to perform telekinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation, and can even enter the psyche of characters around him. Expect to see some zany level design as you dive into the weird and twisted minds of the people you meet.

Monster Hunter: World

I hope you’re ready to explore a vast world, unlock new weapons, and track down humungous creatures, because Monster Hunter: World is set to launch in 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Monster Hunter, as a series, has pretty much stuck to PlayStation since its inception, so it’s exciting to see this adventure-fuelled game coming to more platforms. What’s even more exciting is that Monster Hunter: World will include four player online coop!

Crackdown 3

Crackdown has always been an extremely addictive and enjoyable series and now with Crackdown 3 coming in 2018, we can’t wait to dive back into – and jump over – a new city. Though not a whole lot is known about Crackdown 3’s story and single-player (though it’s likely it will be coop and we’ll be taking down gang leaders), we do know that Crackdown 3 will feature a completely insane multiplayer experience. You’ll be able to take the fight online against seven other players in a completely destructible map. Buildings will explode into rubble and bridges will break – all while you leap through the sky showering your enemies with bullets.

Spider-Man

Developed by none other than Insomniac Games, Spider-Man will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive that will let you slip into the red-and-blue suit of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Insomniac Games has proved their ability to create huge open-world titles, like Sunset Overdrive, so we’re pretty excited to see how Spider-Man feels when it hits our consoles next year. Web-slinging is going to feel pretty damn awesome!

Darksiders III

Darksiders III has been long awaited by the eager fans of the original two games, so it’s a relief to hear it’s finally being released next year. Players will take on the role of Fury, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as she ventures into the ruins of Earth in search of the Seven Deadly Sins. Where War had his trusty sword and Death his scythes, Fury makes use of an intimidating whip to slash apart her foes and move around the Zelda-like environment.

Yoshi (Title TBA)

The Nintendo Switch has its Zelda title, its Mario title, even its Bomberman title, but it’s currently missing a Yoshi title – that is, until 2018 rolls around. While nothing much is known about the next Yoshi game (even its title is a mystery), what is known is the game will be a side-scrolling platformer with a twist – you can flip the camera to see the other side of the screen! Items hiding behind walls and secret paths won’t be able to stay hidden for much longer.

Kirby Star Allies

Kirby Star Allies will be the first Kirby title to make its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2018 and will offer cooperative play with up to four players. The main theme in Kirby Star Allies is that Kirby will be able to throw hearts at enemies to turn them into allies and for each ally Kirby has, he’ll gain new powers. This side-scrolling Kirby title is sure to bring the charm when it releases sometime next year.

Detroit: Become Human

There’s nothing quite like a David Cage game – we’re still scarred from some scenes in Heavy Rain! Detroit: Become Human, is a PlayStation 4 exclusive that introduces players to a world where servant androids are a reality. Humanity’s every desire is cared for by these androids, whether it’s taking care of kids, doing the shopping or being a companion. However, as we all know, robots don’t stay unaware forever. There are multiple playable characters, all of which are mortal and might die before the end if you don’t make the right choices. But that’s part of the appeal of games like these – they’re slightly different each time you start again.

Metro: Exodus

Time to tighten up your belt because Metro: Exodus is looking to scare your pants off. Set in a Russian wasteland, Metro: Exodus tasks you with surviving through its story as you begin your new life outside of the destroyed Moscow. From horrifically nuclear-altered beasts to hostile bandits, Metro: Exodus will have you scrambling in search of ammunition, health and safety as you seek to do the thing humans do best: survive.

Days Gone

“Zombies aren’t scary anymore.” Sony heard you say it, and now we’ve got Days Gone, a third-person action adventure that adds the element of fear back into the zombie genre. Days Gone focuses heavily on its use of audio – someone screaming is going to attract a massive horde of fast moving, super strong, and utterly relentless zombies. You’ll want to ensure you’ve got a pair of Stealth 700s to really take advantage of every audio cue in the game. Oh, and did we mention zombie bears?

The Last of Us Part II

We laughed, we cried, we felt things we hadn’t experienced in years, and all because of the The Last of Us, and now Naughty Dog are going to make us feel emotions all over again with The Last of Us Part II. Set five years after the first game, Part 2 gives you full control of Ellie and instead of exploring the idea of “love”, the game is exploring the notion of “hate”. It’s sounding like The Last of Us Part II is going to be an extremely heavy-hitting title.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Say it with us now, “YESSS!” The year has finally come, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be hitting our consoles and PCs in 2018, and the gaming world couldn’t be happier. Rockstar Games always delivers high-quality video games with incredibly detailed worlds full of things to do, people to meet, and bad guys to kill, so it’s no wonder Red Dead Redemption 2 is so eagerly anticipated. This sequel actually takes us back to the very beginning as we take on the role of Arthur Morgan, a member of the infamous Dutch van der Linde gang. Not much is known about Red Dead Redemption 2 outside of its trailers, but that won’t stop us from dreaming about all the things we want to do in the Wild West!

2017 was a good year, but we’re ready for 2018 and it’s amazing line-up of games. What video game are you most looking forward to playing in 2018?
