When worlds collide, it’s a spectacle for everyone to behold, but when universes collide, it’s a damn masterpiece that makes us want more. The latest and greatest “most ambitious crossover” comes thanks to the hottest game since DOOM’s Hell levels, Fortnite. Players of Epic Games’ Fortnite have been given the chance to become Thanos, the purple psychopath from Avengers: Infinity War. It’s a crossover that no one saw coming, but one we’re all thankful they pulled of – but now we want more. We’ve had a bit of a think, and we’ve come up with a handful of other crossovers that we wouldn’t mind seeing. So, game developers, if you’re listening, these ones are on us.
Lara Croft and Nathan Drake
One is a powerful adventurer who fights off soldiers and the other, well, they both do it. These two adventurers have held a place in our heart for many years, and with the recent resurgence of the Tomb Raider series, it would be rather incredible to see what type of stories the writers could cook up when both universes play together.
Having Lara Croft in an Uncharted title, or Nathan Drake in a Tomb Raider, would be something we could all get behind. Throwing Nathan into a real survival-type situation, full of crafting weapons and ammo, would really open up the series and allow for new stories to be told.
As for how the two would interact, Nathan’s cockiness and Lara’s cool and calm personality would likely clash at first, but it would certainly lead to a strong friendship. Besides, it would answer the age old question of who’s the better explorer. And we all know who that is. Right?
Marcus Fenix and Master Chief
One is an alien killing machine and the other – you get the picture. Nearly every gamer worth their salt fell in love with Halo when it launched, along with the original Xbox, back in 2001. It’s been a staple in many late-night LAN parties and even helped usher in the importance of Xbox Live. Gears of War then took the ball and ran with it, dominating online play for anyone who owned an Xbox 360.
Every time a new Halo or Gears of War game comes out, we’re certain to grab it and spend the next day glued to our screen. The gameplay pulls us in and the audio mesmerizes us – especially when using a headset like the Stealth 700. All the explosions are earth-shattering and all the smaller sounds are highlighted thanks to the Windows Sonic surround sound technology.
And now, in the age of ambitious crossovers, we’d love to see Master Chief visit Marcus Fenix’s world and help them eradicate the Locust once and for all. Similarly, Master Chief could learn a thing or two from Marcus Fenix about dealing with unscrupulous military organizations.
It would be a whole new world playing as Master Chief in third person, or using a Lancer in first person. Come on, Microsoft, make it happen.
Sam Fisher and Rainbow Six
The Rainbow Six team excel at high-octane situations that require going in loud, but they are also pretty good at sneaking around saving hostages. Then there’s Sam Fisher, the ultimate SpecOps field agent. Anyone on the wrong side of his gun won’t know what hit them. The team that comprises Rainbow Six have their fair share of experience dealing with on-the-record types of encounters, but Sam Fisher could introduce them to the world of espionage, where a tight line must be walked on the job and off.
Both of these franchises are the property of Ubisoft, so it’s not unreasonable to think it could be done. Sam Fisher has already appeared in Ghost Recon Wildlands, and it has been three years since Rainbow Six Siege was released, so it could be time for these two universes to collide.
Doom Slayer and BJ Blazkowicz
Any gamer looking for a blood-drenched experience should look no further than the 2016 DOOM reboot or the recent critically-acclaimed Wolfenstein II – but imagine if a crossover existed between these two games.
Officially known as Doom Slayer in the 2016 reboot, but loved and admired by many as Doomguy, the lead protagonist of the demon-slaying slaughter-fest of the Doom series would make BJ Blazkowicz’s life a hell of a lot easier. Doomguy doesn’t have to worry about emotions or taking care of anyone, he’s an unstoppable killing machine that would deliver swift justice to those Nazi bastards.
On the flip side, BJ Blazkowicz could jump through the portal to Hell and come face-to-face with the Nazis he sent there, and then kill them all again! It would be the ultimate way to exact revenge on those who have wronged you. Again, the advantage here is that both the DOOM franchise and Wolfenstein series are controlled by Bethesda – it’s almost too perfect.
These crossovers might never happen, but we can all surely dream. If Mario can play with Rabbids, and if Thanos can invade the world of Fortnite, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility to imagine that one (or more!) of these could come true. What type of game crossovers would you like to see?
