Pokémon is one of those franchises that is so beloved that it can’t seem to really lose, that is until Nintendo revealed Pokémon Unite. To say the internet reactions to the Pokémon MOBA were divisive would be a massive understatement, and it seems like there is no in-between when it comes to whether people loved the reveal or absolutely hated it.

The Pokemon Company really knows how to win 'em over, huh?
It's almost like telling people to get hyped for your presentation, only to reveal a mobile game that would've been a footnote last week, is actually BAD for your brand.#PokemonPresents #PokemonUnite pic.twitter.com/L4Rw8MR2nB

I just can't fathom how Pokemon had Unite and Snap 2 and said, "yes, Unite is the one that we wanna hype up with its own conference an extra week later. THIS is the one we wanna give special attention." pic.twitter.com/V3X7Lfvj5q

I'm not mad that #Pokemon Unite exists. I'm just annoyed that they teased us and made us wait a whole week for something so underwhelming. Would've been better if they added it to last weeks presentation. I kept my expectations extremely low and I was still disappointed. Thanks. pic.twitter.com/dRalrCyIPW

Not all of the reactions were bad though, to be fair. Some were genuinely excited to see a brand-new take on this popular franchise. We’ve seen cooking spins, mobile games, RPGs, and more – why not a MOBA? Worst case scenario: it flops and we have a billion other Pokémon experiences to enjoy instead:

Ya’ll need to set expectations low in a post-Go world. We’ll get stuff like Snap occasionally, but they’re way more interested in free-to-play games with heavy microtransactions now. You’ll be disappointed more often than not if you’re expecting anything else.

Unpopular Opinion…
I'm actually excited to try #PokemonUnite and see what it's all about.

As a fan of League of Legends and DOTA2, ya'll can't kill my hype for this. Please remember that some fans *have* been waiting for a game like Pokémon Unite. pic.twitter.com/lcvxgYiHTI

For those that may have missed out on the original reveal, Pokémon Unite is a 5v5 MOBA experience that will task players with the objective of taking out the enemy team with the help of some of our most loved pocket monsters. The structure is very similar to that of games like DOTA and League of Legends, which is a niche that has a high player rate and high retention rate.
Do we think Pokémon Unite will be the next big thing in esports? No, absolutely not, but the idea is intriguing and we are interested in learning more about what this specific experience will have to offer fans.
What are your thoughts on the Pokémon Unite MOBA? Will you be jumping into the battles that it has to offer, or are you in the camp that just isn’t feeling it?
