The Switch Games You Need For Your Summer Holidays

When packing for vacation, don’t forget this Nintendo Switch games!

The dog days of summer have arrived, which means traveling to visit family and friends, and spending precious moments away from the comfort of our couches, computer chairs, and our gaming consoles and PCs. However, thanks to the beauty of the Nintendo Switch, we can take our gaming with us on vacation. Whether it’s a challenging platformer or a gorgeous action adventure, these are the Switch games you need this summer!

Celeste

One of the best things about the Nintendo Switch is its ability to fill any amount of time, whether it’s short moments where you have nothing to do or long hours on a plane ride. However, it wouldn’t be able to do this if it wasn’t for games like Celeste, which can be enjoyed in five minute bursts or over the course of several hours.

Celeste is a platformer game created by Matt Thorson and Noel Berry where you take on the role of Madeline, a lone traveller who must fight her inner demons as she journeys to the top of Celeste Mountain. Each level plays out in a tile format, where upon reaching the end, the next section of the level flits onto the screen. This creates a “bite sized” style of gameplay that allows players to jump in and out, either completing a few screens or struggling through one particularly challenging tile.

Celeste’s easy to pick-up-and-play nature (but increasing difficulty) makes it the perfect Switch game to take with you on vacation!

Fortnite

E3 2018 had a lot of surprises, but none were as awesome as Nintendo finally announcing that Fortnite is coming the Switch – and not just “coming soon” but that it was in fact available to download immediately! For those who might have been living under a rock in Hyrule, Fortnite is the latest and greatest battle royale experience that blends the fort construction of the base game (Save the World) with the fast-paced nature of the last man standing genre.

Fortnite has exploded in popularity ever since Epic Games pivoted to include a purely PVP experience for those players who were looking for some added challenge. What makes Fortnite so good for vacationing is that it is cross-platform, meaning you can play it with your friend on Xbox One while you play it on your Switch.

Of course, you’re going to want to have every advantage possible, which is why the soon to be launched Stealth 300 is the perfect addition while vacationing. The superior 50mm speakers will let you hear every single detail, whether that’s someone in the distance sniping or an enemy creeping around the corner. Furthermore, with a flip-up mic, you’ll be able to communicate and strategize with your teammates at a moment’s notice, or tuck it away when it’s not needed.

Snipperclips

While Celeste will test your platforming skills and Fortnite will give you the rush you need while on vacation, Snipperclips is the perfect game to play with a family member who might not be that into gaming. This adorable little title is all about teamwork and puzzle solving. Each player takes on the role of a shape, and using the snipping and clipping ability, must cut one another into various shapes and sizes in order to solve each level and the puzzles within.

There are a variety of levels, each requiring unique shapes and forms in order for the puzzles to be solved. One level might require players to carry a ball from one side to the other while another might have a more complicated series of steps requiring a lot more cutting! If you’re spending some time with family on your vacation, it’s definitely worth taking Snipperclips along for the ride.

Super Mario Odyssey

A good holiday cannot be had without Mario, and what better title than the critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey? If you thought the platforming in Celeste was incredible, wait until you get your hands on Super Mario Odyssey. Nintendo has once again struck gold, because this is arguably the best Mario game in a long time – they are all great, so this is really saying something!

Super Mario Odyssey takes the classic jumping of a Mario game and adds a whole new dimension to the levels by allowing Mario to throw his hat (Cappy) at enemies, capturing them, and taking their power. Vast distances can be travelled in an instant when possessing a Bullet Bill or enemies can be defeated with ease when using Sherm – a massive tank!

Plus, there are hundreds of collectibles in Super Mario Odyssey, giving you lots of things to do on those long plane rides or when it’s raining while at the beach.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Finally, it’s not even worth going on vacation if you don’t have The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. From the first time we explored a strange land after waking up on the beach to when we first ran around Hyrule Field, Zelda has always held a special place in our hearts. Now, some thirty-odd years since the original first launched, the Hero of Time is once again dominating our game time.

It’s not just a visually stunning game, Breath of the Wild also has some incredible sounds. From the way storms roll in overhead to the intense pacing of the combat, we’re constantly taking a moment to just listen to the world Nintendo has created. If you haven’t already, get your hands on a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, just be prepared for your entire holiday to disappear as you endeavor to save Zelda once more!

Holiday and vacation time are essential for recharging and getting back into school or work with fresh eyes, but it wouldn’t be a holiday without a Nintendo Switch and excellent games to play. Whether you’re staying at home or heading out of town on an adventure, these Switch games are essential to your travels.
