A Few Good Reasons to Play Fortnite

Fortnite is hitting all the right notes with its gameplay and new game modes.

What started as an in-depth zombie shooting, base building, cooperative early access game has turned into one of the biggest phenomenon in gaming. That’s right, Fortnite is now edging its way into multiple genres – including the beloved battle royale. If you’re yet to dive into Epic Games’ latest, well, epic game, there are a few damn good reasons to play Fortnite!

Base Building

You get a base! You get a base! Everyone gets a base! In Fortnite, if you’re able to boot up the game and get started, you’re going to be building bases. It’s one of the fundamental features of the game. Playing story missions gives you ample opportunity to scavenge for materials that can be used to reinforce your homebase in the overworld, allowing you to design the perfect zombie-resistant building.

It’s one of the main attractions of Fortnite: chilling out in your homebase, setting up new barricades and researching new ways to defend against zombies. When everything’s all set up, you can choose to test out your base by summoning a zombie horde, which also helps unlock cool new items and upgrades. Once the zombies start cropping up, the intensity and excitement increases as you scramble to find where they are. The groaning of zombies in the distance adds to the atmosphere, as do the powerful and sometimes hilarious sounds of the weaponry.

RPG Elements

Fortnite has a deep and rich skill tree system.

It’s not just base building where you’ll spend a lot of your time in Fortnite as there is also a vast and complex skill tree system. You can customize your character to your heart’s content, and every time you level up, you’ll be granted with more resources to unlock even more abilities. Every ability has a prerequisite skill as well as a quest attached to it, so there’s always something to do, another quest to complete and something more to work toward.

As you add new heroes to your roster, you’ll receive new defenders, abilities, tech enhancements, the list goes on. It’s one of the most rewarding skill tree systems in gaming today, where each hour you spend playing will directly affect how powerful you become.

Battle Royale

After the huge success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it was only a matter of time before we started seeing more games inspired by the cultural phenomenon that is the battle royale genre. Simply called Battle Royale, Fortnite’s take on the survival of the fittest includes some of the best elements of the standard game: quirky weapons, fun environments and base building.

The battle begins by having you eject from a bus, floating through the sky via a hot air balloon. When you hit the ground, it’s time to find a weapon, break down some houses and trees for resources and avoid the approaching storm. Gunfights in Fortnite’s battle royale mode are fast and intense, and a well-placed wall can save your life in a pinch.

Probably the most important strategy when playing Fortnite’s Battle Royal mode is to pay close attention to your surroundings, especially what you can hear. With a headset like the Stealth 700 for PlayStation 4 you can hear your enemies chipping away at a building with their axe before you can even see them. This gives you a very clear advantage, allowing you to either lie in wait or sneak up and take them by surprise!

Exciting Game Modes

A recent addition to the line-up of game modes in Fortnite was a 50v50 all-out war extravaganza. Unfortunately, this was only a limited-time offer, but that didn’t stop players flocking to the game in droves. Typically in Fortnite, you’ll play with a band of friends defending against waves of zombies or dive into the 100-player Battle Royale – but not in 50v50.

As the name suggests, 50v50 pits fifty players against another fifty players and the last team standing is the winner. What’s more is that the base building is a prime mechanic and a valuable strategy in this mode. Before long, both teams will have humungous bases, with defensive perimeters and terraces, arrow slits and shooting gantries. It’s up to you to fight your way in, knock down your enemy’s last line of defence and take the victory!

Now is the perfect time to get into Fortnite, as the Battle Royale mode is completely free to download! Once you get a taste for the base building and gunplay, consider checking out the Save the World PvE campaign where you can fight back the zombie horde, team up with your friends, and unlock tonnes of abilities for your heroes.
