Spooky Games To Play With Friends

Halloween is right around the corner, which means spooky season is in full effect.  It really puts you in the mood for some scary good times, doesn’t it?  If you consider yourself someone more into treats than tricks, why not treat yourself to some ghoulish gaming sessions with your friends?  Gather your best buddies online, turn down the lights, and fire up these multiplayer favorites for some frighteningly fun times.

Dead by Daylight

Just don’t flashlight spam your friends. Not cool.

Dead by Daylight may have been released all the way back in 2016, but with a constant rollout of new features and content, the game is bigger than ever in 2021.  This asymmetric title drops five players into nearly every horror movie cliché you can think of, pitting four survivors against one killer.  As the survivors, it’s your job to not only protect each other, but work together in order to stymie the killer, and escape by the skin of your teeth.  As the killer, you’ll have access to numerous supernatural powers that will help you hunt down your prey.  With representation from iconic horror franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and many others, Dead by Daylight is the perfect game for you and your friends to get your scare on.

Phasmophobia

Remember to turn the lights off if not going VR for this one.

Want your Halloween gaming to be a more psychological affair, rather than a slasher’s dream come true?  Phasmophobia will definitely have you jumping at every little sound, and sweating from the anticipation of what lurks around the corner.  In Phasmophobia, four players come together to do a little paranormal investigating.  Plan out an approach with your team, select from a litany of ghost-hunting gear, and set off into a haunted house to find the specter causing all the trouble.  Expect a quiet, tense experience that’ll get under your skin, and make you unbelievably paranoid.  You can throw on a VR headset to really immerse yourself in the experience, but be prepared for weeks of nightmares to follow!

Back 4 Blood

Squad normally into shooters? B4B will do nicely.

Are you a big fan of zombie apocalypse movies like Dawn of the Dead or 28 Days Later?  You can play out an experience close to those cinematic classics by giving Back 4 Blood a shot.  This title comes from the same team behind the Left 4 Dead series, and it provides nearly identical gameplay.  Four friends are dropped smack-dab in the middle of a world overrun by zombies, and it’s your job to plow through them all.  Pick from weapons like pistols, shotguns, and rifles, stock up on molotov cocktails and grenades, and leave the confines of your safe house to push back the zombie horde.  It’s going to be a gruesome affair filled with challenges, but with the right kind of firepower and expert communication, you might live to see another day.

Friday the 13th: The Game

Is there any more horror franchise more iconic than Friday the 13th?  The hockey-masked Jason Voorhees has been making trouble for promiscuous, party-going teens for decades, and now he’s slicing and dicing in the world of video games.  Friday the 13th: The Game takes you to unforgettable locations from the films, like Camp Crystal Lake, Packanack Lodge, and Higgins Haven, and gives you the role of a camp counselor or Jason himself.  As a camp counselor, your goal is to escape by any means possible.  Options for escaping include fixing a car, launching a boat, calling the police, waiting out the time limit, or even attempting to kill Jason.  As Jason, your only objective is to kill every single counselor, and you can do so by using a number of special skills and weapons.  With seven counselors on the run and Jason out for blood, who do you think will emerge the victor?
