What is Escape from Tarkov?

The title is described to be a “hardcore and realistic online first-person action RPG/Simulator with MMO features and a story-driven walkthrough” on its official website. Those who jump into the world of Escape from Tarkov will be thrown into the Special Economic Zone of the fictional Norvinsk region. Tarkov is one of the largest cities in the area and was at the center of a major political scandal that resulted in armed conflict between UN Peacekeepers, Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and two private military companies known as USEC and BEAR.  USEC and BEAR were hired by opposing sides of the Tarkov conflict with the Terra Group international corporation employing the USEC and Norvinsk region officials using the services of BEAR.

Players take on the role of a USEC or BEAR mercenary who makes the decision to venture out of the city, which has been cut off from the rest of the world by both the United States and Russian militaries. Players then must collect gear and fight for survival against savage civilian scavengers (SCAVS) and other players in an environment where death means the loss of everything you have worked for.

The central premise of playing this title is to venture out into the world and secure valuable pieces of loot for your inventory. You will then need to extract from the particular map you are playing on safely to keep all of the useful gear you were able to collect in your playing session for future adventures. However, if your character dies before you can extract, you will lose everything that the character had. This all or nothing style when it comes to Escape from Tarkov means that alertness, patience, and strategy will be just as crucial as your accuracy with a weapon.

Now that you have an idea of what Escape from Tarkov is, let’s take a look at some things you should know about that will help you be the best player you can be:

PMC vs SCAVs

Fortunately, there is a way for players to be able to enjoy the action of Escape from Tarkov without worrying about losing all of their character’s gear. Individuals can play as a member of the SCAVs who possess a random set of equipment, weapons, and health. You will not lose any of your gear from your main character if you die as a SCAV, and you can transfer any loot you find as a SCAV back to your PMC main character. Unfortunately, those who would like to play as a SCAV as much as possible can not do so, as there is a cooldown timer that prevents players from being them all of the time.

Due to you not being able to play as a SCAV all of the time, it is important to know how to make sure your PMC character is as healthy as they can be. The health system of the survival FPS focuses on a variety of different areas that determine how close your character is to bite the dust. These areas include hydration, energy, blood pressure, bloodloss, fractures, contusion, intoxication, exhaustion, tremors, and more. These play into the 435 health points your character possesses that are spread amongst their body parts. You can see the status of your character’s limbs by the color that they are represented by at any given time. Black means that the limb is gone and can only be brought back to minimal health with a CMS kit or a Surv12 field surgical kit. Red means that the limb is damaged and needs treatment like a bandage to stop blood loss. Gray color means your limb is healthy and in no need of medical treatment. A heightened awareness of your character’s health at all times is a necessary skill that players will need to hone if they are to see success in the deadly world of Escape from Tarkov.

Starting Out

Unfortunately, there are likely to be times that you will meet your demise when you are first starting out in Escape from Tarkov. Thankfully there is an insurance system present in the title that allows you to retrieve the items you may have lost in a raid for a price. Players have the option of getting either Prapor or Therapist insurance for their loot. Prapor is the cheaper of the two but takes longer to get your gear back into your inventory. You also have to be aware of the fact that the insurance will only be able to give your loot back if no other player has taken it from your body, meaning that even the insurance does not guarantee you will not lose your precious gear if you die. It will take around 24-36 hours for the Prapor insurance to give you back your items with the Therapist insurance returning your equipment back to your inventory between 12-24 hours. There will then be a 72 hour period where you will be able to retrieve your loot before it is lost forever. Taking advantage of the game’s insurance system will help you have a better chance of keeping your hard-earned loot and prevent you from having to start over from scratch consistently.

Escape from Tarkov boasts an extensive weapon system that provides players with a treasure trove of different firearms they can collect and use in their fights. These weapons follow a very realistic operating system where players have to be aware of their guns overheating, jamming, and wearing out. Each of the survival title’s weapons also possesses realistic recoil and ballistics, which means you can not just point and click and assume you will hit your target. Those looking to enhance their skills in Escape from Tarkov will need to take the time to get a feel for the various aspects of their weapons to avoid being on the losing side of a firefight because they missed a critical shot or their gun was not in suitable operating shape.

Get Out of Dodge

Then there are the extractions. The end-game of Escape from Tarkov tasks players with being able to safely extract from the multitude of maps available for the community to enjoy with all of their shiny loot ready to be added to their inventories. You can increase your chances of escaping from Tarkov by knowing which areas are viable extractions zones. The map section of the official Escape from Tarkov Wikipedia provides detailed maps of where players can find extraction points in each playable area. Extraction points that are open and ready for use can be spotted by their active lamps, green smoke, or spotlights. However, some extraction points can only be used by certain factions, used only once in a raid instance, or require a particular object like a key to be used. Gaining a strong understanding of the extraction points will help you immensely in having plenty of successful extractions in your future raids.

Battlestate Games’ Escape from Tarkov is undoubtedly one of the most massive trending titles in the world of multiplayer video games right now. This interest is thanks to the intense and satisfying action it delivers on a routine basis for players who take the time to learn the ins and outs of its realistic and hardcore playing style. Those who become students of what Escape from Tarkov is made of will be able to become formidable forces that will be able to take on any kind of threat that may challenge them in the Norvinsk region.
